MyHealth

EU funded project which aims to improve the healthcare access of vulnerable immigrants and refugees by developing and implementing models based on the knowhow of a European multidisciplinary network

Introduction

On January 2014, the number of people living in the EU-28 who were citizens of non-member countries was 19.6 million people, 3.9% of EU-28 population. The number of asylum applications from 1992 to 2015 nearly doubled. Twenty-nine percent of these applications were minors, 23% were unaccompanied (Eurostat, 2015, Migration and Migrant Population Statistics Report).

The promotion of wellbeing and access to quality health and social care services is often limited for at risk populations. Migrants disproportionately have impaired health and poor access to health services. Difficulties accessing the healthcare systems arise from various causes, including but not limited to linguistic barriers, lack of understanding of different cultures, social exclusion, un-documented situation, bureaucracy and economic difficulties. Vulnerable migrants and refugees (VMR) are a heterogeneous group facing challenges in health-related issue. Health care systems should be prepared to respond to their diverse needs.

Overall aim

The main aim of MyHealth is to improve the healthcare access of vulnerable immigrants and refugees (VMR) newly arrived to Europe, by developing and implementing models based on the knowhow of a European multidisciplinary network. MyHealth Project will focus on women and unaccompanied minors newly arrived in Europe (less than five years).

Central objectives

  1. Develop a comprehensive, interactive map outlining the main health issues, main actors and stakeholders; reference sites dealing with migrants’ remittances (MREM); legal and organisational aspects of health systems in the partner countries; and the available ICT tools.
  2. Clearly define the current health problems of migrants treated in health centres.
  3. Define and develop health intervention strategies in mental health as well as communicable and non-communicable diseases utilising a community health approach.
  4. Develop an ICT based platform to support tools, enhance health applications development and health information.
  5. Implement defined strategies and models in pilot over the hospital participating in the consortium.
  6. Train and involve key actors (from users to management) in the health system value chain.
  7. Ensure sound management and effective communication for MyHealth.
